The nucleus accumbens (NAc), one of the brain nuclei, plays a significant role in motivational and emotional processes and is involved in various neurological and psychiatric disorders. While the cortical and subcortical connections of the NAc are well-documented, its anatomical connection with the brainstem and cerebellar structures is relatively poorly understood. This study aims to investigate the anatomical connections of the NAc with the understudied brainstem and cerebellar structures, which could have important implications for understanding the neural mechanisms underlying many neurological disorders.<\/p>\n
The connection between the NAc and the dentate nucleus has only been identified in humans. Given the increasing interest in stereotactic targeting of the NAc for therapeutic interventions such as deep brain stimulation in disorders like addiction, understanding brainstem and cerebellar connections is crucial to minimize unexpected side effects and optimize clinical outcomes.
