Ergin Atalar and colleagues have published “SAR-Efficient Sub-Volume Imaging Using Nonlinear Gradient Magnetic Fields” in Journal of Imaging (June 2026).
The study shows how nonlinear gradient magnetic fields can be used to image only a small region of the body with MRI. Because these fields encode in two directions at once, they allow fast reduced field-of-view imaging with standard radiofrequency pulses. The authors compare the approach with conventional selective pulses in scan time, echo time and tissue heating (SAR). Imaging only the region of interest could make targeted scans faster while depositing less RF energy in the body.
