Abstract: It is well known that functional MRI (fMRI) signal variations covary, in part, with fluctuations in physiological signals. Since fluctuations in systemic physiology are likely to occur during various conditions, such as wakefulness, drowsiness, and sleep, a careful interpretation of brain connectivity analyses should take this contribution into account. Furthermore, recent work suggests that slow waves during sleep may induce the removal of metabolic waste, possibly through cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pulsatile movement. It is also known that pulsations may be induced by direct pressure effects from cardiac and respiratory cycles. In this presentation, I will discuss the interactions between systemic physiology and the brain’s fMRI signal, spatiotemporal brain dynamics throughout an overnight sleep study, and the implications of arousal state on CSF dynamics.

About the Speaker: Dr. Özbay received her B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from Boğaziçi University in 2009. Following her undergraduate, she completed her M.Sc. in Computational Science and Engineering at the Technical University of Munich and received her Ph.D. from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. During her Ph.D., she gained expertise in studying brain anatomy and function with novel MRI techniques, such as developing and improving Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping and its application to functional and clinical studies. In 2017, she joined NIH Advanced MRI Section of the Laboratory of Functional and Molecular Imaging to broaden her experience in multimodal acquisitions during sleep and wakefulness, which included measures and advanced analysis of behavioral, physiological, fMRI, and EEG data. She is the recipient of the TÜBİTAK 2232 International Fellowship for Outstanding Researchers and currently a faculty member at Boğaziçi University, Institute of Biomedical Engineering.
